Is AI a translation powerhouse?
AI is revolutionising how large translation projects are handled, offering opportunities for increased translation speed, efficiency, and improved quality. Is it an industry powerhouse? – we believe it is.
Professional Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tools have incorporated Neural Machine Translation (MT) tools for some years, enhancing both productivity and quality.
Whilst MT initially prompted concerns regarding translation quality, the industry has adapted to intelligent use of the technology and developed workflow processes that maximise the efficiencies gained while managing quality.
AI now extends the possibilities originally recognised when using MT not simply in how it enhances the translation process, but also in the fields of video voice-over and subtitling.
Does AI create opportunities for clients?
At a commercial level, larger conventionally translated projects while often desirable to have from the client’s viewpoint, could not justify the high cost of production and the time needed to deliver the project.
The same applies to larger audio and video projects – often a key component in educational and training programmes.
And while AI isn’t a panacea, if applied correctly, it does make the previously impossible possible by reducing translation costs and improving productivity.

The human touch?
AI is great for carrying out high volumes of pre-translation and developing effective workflows for complex projects.
But it’s worth remembering that AI also makes mistakes, doesn’t always construct translated sentences accurately, and can miss the subtleties and nuances of the original content.
So, now we can translate the corpus of the project faster, it gives us more time to focus on delivering a higher quality product by using our human linguistic expertise more effectively.
AI hasn’t taken away the human touch!
Which of your language needs can benefit from AI?
We’ve found that it’s an effective solution when used as a basis for style-neutral texts such as manuals, general business communications, eCommerce product catalogues, and social media assets.
Training and eLearning videos can be quickly adapted for new markets and audiences using AI-generated voice-over and subtitles.
Is an AI solution free?
AI can certainly provide a low-cost solution, and typically, an AI-generated translation will need proofreading as a minimum to ensure the translated product is fit for purpose.
However, depending on the subject and the complexity of the content to be translated, coupled with the quality of the AI output, the amount of editing can increase.
The professional tools we use have a cost attached to them, but they are a vital aid to delivering a product that is delivered in your ‘voice,’ uses approved terminology, and is well-structured.
And AI may not be the best solution for every project that’s commissioned. But that’s where our experienced team of translation managers will advise you.
But if you are considering a project with a large number of words and you need it quickly, an AI/MT-generated translation may be the right solution for you.
