2021 Census data may show changes in UK language use, affecting legal services’ demand for diverse translations and interpretations.

I am interested to see the 2021 Census results on language.

Taking a look at data from the 2011 Census, “those who reported English (or Welsh in Wales) as their main language accounted for 92.3% of the population, except in London where the proportion was much lower.

Of the remaining population, Polish was the most common answer and accounted for approximately 1% of the total population. Those in London and the West Midlands were home to the largest proportions of people who claimed to not speak English “well” or “at all”.

It would be interesting to see if this has changed and how it relates to the combination of languages now being requested for translation, transcription and interpreting services.

The Current State

With the Brexit legislation, there has been a rapid increase in multilingual forms, contracts, tenders and other legal documents for the right to remain. Legal documents submitted by overseas corporations, businesses or foreign nationals in the UK in support of applications or disputes often require translation into English.

The solicitors, legal counsel and law firms involved rely on translation services and interpreting for high-quality accurate content and a good understanding of legal terminology, court process and delivery schedules.

There are also many instances where the translation of foreign documents into English and vice-versa might be necessary. Below are some of the areas language services can assist law firms with:

  • Legal documents for immigration purposes
  • Copyright, patent, and trademark
  • Business contracts for overseas transactions
  • Arbitration
  • Corporate documents i.e. T&C, warranty
  • International fraud claims
  • E-discovery for litigation claims
  • Secure transcription

Machine Translation can help

In a field which requires documents and court bundles to be translated accurately, the idea of using translation software can be met with surprise. Solicitors can benefit from translation that uses AI machine translation technology to reduce the amount of time it takes to translate thousands of documents manually. Machine translation tools are capable of processing up to 20,000 words over a 24-hour period depending on the source file and language.

This can then be supplemented by post-editing to make sure that the end result is as accurate as possible.
