Introducing Chris: Bridging the Gap Between Sound and Silence

Introduction

In our ever-evolving commitment to inclusivity and diversity, we’re thrilled to introduce our newest team member, Chris Lewis. Not only is Chris stepping into the role of Business Development Manager, but he is also an accomplished BSL (British Sign Language) Interpreter.

This dual role underlines our dedication to fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and understood.

For many in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, the language of BSL is not just a tool for communication but an embodiment of identity and culture. By having Chris on board, we’re taking a critical step towards breaking down barriers and championing inclusivity.

Stay tuned to get to know Chris better and discover the heart behind his mission and ours.

Professional Insights

What role will you be taking on at Prestige Network?

I’m taking on the role of Business Development Manager but my passion is lies within the inclusion division, where I’ll be able to advise and raise awareness about diversity and raising Deaf awareness.

What attracted you to the language solutions and technology field?

Being a BSL interpreter I understand the need for people to have access to communication. Prestige are committed to delivering quality communication through technology and language solutions.

Prestige Network and Aspirations

What about Prestige Network stood out to you, making you decide to join?

With the launch of Prestige’s LinguaNyx and it’s investment towards inclusion it felt a good time to join that aligned with my own core values.

You have a background in Education Technology and BSL interpreting. Given your experience, how do you see the future of BSL interpreting evolving, and how does Prestige Network and the Inclusion division fit into that vision?

Accessibility is a huge area, raising awareness of BSL and enabling members of the Deaf community to be integrated and equal access to services whether that be via face to face interpreting or video relay service.

Which of Prestige Network’s core values or missions resonates most deeply with you?

Commitment towards inclusion.

Personal Insights about Deaf Awareness and BSL

What inspired you to learn BSL?

Providing access and overcoming communication barriers. Everyone’s voice should be heard.

How do you feel the wider community can be better educated or made more aware of BSL and its importance?

BSL is a beautiful language and I think the Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Aysling-Ellis describes it best, “I have no problem with being Deaf, it’s society that makes it hard for me” I think anybody who learns BSL no matter how basic it is, helps to break down those barriers.

Culture and Environment at Prestige Network

What’s your perception of the company culture at Prestige Network, and how do you see yourself fitting in?

It’s a natural fit into Prestige, it has a family feel to it. I’m excited to see how the company progresses.

Have you had any previous experiences with a company tradition or ritual that you found beneficial for team cohesion?

I love travelling and seeing the various areas of the world. So I’ve always enjoyed cultural days where people bring traditional foods or activities from their homelands. During the pandemic there were a lot of quizzes done on Teams / Zoom, which I thought we’re great for cohesion.

Continued Growth and Learning

Language solutions and technology are ever-evolving fields. How do you keep up with the latest trends or changes, especially in BSL?

As part of the profession, we have to do 24 hours of Continual Professional Development a year, part of this involves keeping up with changes and trends as well as training opportunities. I also play an active role in meeting up with fellow interpreters locally and within my region.

How do you think organisations can best approach language challenges or new requirements for Deaf Awareness Training or BSL interpreting?

Embrace it, learning different cultures and languages can be fun. It brings new perspectives and helps you to develop a close bond with those from different backgrounds and cultures to our own.

Light-hearted and Fun Insights

If you could interpret any historical figure or event, who or what would it be?

At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic there was no BSL interpreter for Boris Johnson’s announcement, even though the Scotland managed to arrange one it seemed like our Prime Minister refused for a myriad of reasons that simply weren’t good enough and impacted the Deaf community with increased anxiety and isolation, highlighted that communication barriers and oppression existed within the leadership of the country. I would probably choose to interpret that event because it was such an anxious time and sparked the #whereistheinterpreter campaign.

Final Thoughts

What are your aspirations for your first year with Prestige Network?

Growth amongst the Education sector and we’ll definitely see a huge push on inclusion, diversity and equality.
