Diversity TrainingPrestige Network Launches

New Cultural Training Team

20th Oct 2009

Prestige Network Ltd is to launch a new cultural training service aimed at delivering training on all aspects of cultural diversity.

A new team, headed up by Prestige Network director Anthony Fleming, aims to deliver all aspects of cultural diversity training - including conflict resolution, change management and business leadership - in order to turn cultural difference to competitive advantage.

The service, due to start in November 2009, will be aimed at any organisation which employs people from overseas - such as manufacturing companies, call-centre operations and BPOs (Business Process Outsourcing companies). A large number of languages (and their cultures) will be addressed including Hindi (India), Polish (Poland) and Arabic (Middle East).

Anthony said: "Understanding and appreciating intercultural differences ultimately promotes clearer communication, builds trust, breaks barriers, strengthens relationships, opens horizons and gives businesses a competitive advantage.

"With today's society being more multicultural than ever before, it's important for organisations to be aware of the diverse needs and cultures of both their staff and clients alike.

"Language and cultural divisions in communities can be a big problem - it can lead to misunderstandings which are hard to overcome. It's much better to put in place a cultural roadmap first. This will lead to more effective communication across cultural boundaries."

Cultural awareness training on its own is no longer considered to be enough in today’s fast-paced world. There is a growing need to be able to negotiate and communicate effectively across cultural boundaries - and that means addressing training issues such as conflict resolution, change management and business leadership through intercultural training. A number of fixed packages will be on offer as well as tailor-made options.

The team is being headed up by one of Prestige Network's directors, Anthony Fleming. The service is an expansion of the company's current cultural awareness service. Prestige Network's biggest job so far was when 38 colloquial Dari linguists were sent to Brunei to prepare soldiers before embarking on trips to Afghanistan as part of the MoD’s operational policy of 'winning hearts and minds'.

Anthony has also been part of a team (at a previous company) delivering a large cultural awareness training contract to a BPO (Business Process Outsourcing company) in India on behalf of a UK utilities company.

He said: "Our new cultural training team is the equivalent of the pelican in the HSBC television advert, enabling an organisation to make the most of local customs to be as effective as possible. In the advert the pelican is employed by the fisherman in a boat to maximise the number fish he catches. Our approach will be to offer tailor-made cultural training programmes to address their individual needs - part of that process could be to first offer a free needs analysis consultation of up to two hours.

"This programme could include conflict resolution, change management and business leadership. Whichever avenue we pursue, there will be an element of coaching as a culturally-aware mindset is vitally important.

"Today's successful managers require the skills to operate in a global marketplace, to understand the cultural implications of their decisions and possess the ability to turn cultural difference to competitive advantage."
